Things you never knew about Syria before the war.

Things you never knew about Syria before the war.

FOR the past seven years, Syria has been making headlines the world over — for all the wrong reasons. But before the war, this Middle Eastern nation was once a powerhouse.

Syria has been a cradle of civilization for at least 10,000 years. It has been part of the major empires of history, including Egyptian, Persian and Roman.

Once regarded as a political and military heavyweight in the region, Syria’s rich history and cultural significance is both complex and diverse.

The diversity of the Syrian people

For centuries, Syria has been a melting pot of religion and ethnicities.

Syria’s majority are Sunni Muslim, while 12 more percent are Sheat and Alawite Muslims and four percent are Druze. The remainder of the population is 10 per cent Christian with small Jewish enclaves in Syrian cities, while northeast of Syria has a Kurdish majority, nine per cent of the population.

Most of the minority religion in Syria Say:

“I’ve lived in Syria my whole life, and I never had a problem as a Christian. Muslims were always helpful, including when it came to things like finding a job,”

Syria the cradle of civilization :

Full of ancient Mosques, Roman ruins, castles built and souks, “Syria is one of the most beautiful countries ... everyone used to come here to see our monuments and old cities, from Palmyra, Malula to the old castle in Aleppo, where the ancient Folklore are getting along with the modern building style.

I often think of Syria as a magic book full of adventures and stories about history and love and war — and I wait for the day this war will end and become a story.

However, with all the insane news and horrific images that keep pouring out of the syrian war, with shelling and bombing that is ruining much of Syria’s antiquities, architecture and heritage sites, I wanted to put together a series of images from Syrian cities that remind myself and everyone who has lived, visited or perhaps wanted to visit this beautiful country, of a time when we lived in peace, shared amazing memories and experiences of a culture rich in its history.

Syria, a country which is known as the ancient pearl and the beginning of civilization is home that invented and brought the oldest written alphabet and the first musical notation.
